It was so much fun canoeing out to a great blue heron rookery on a swampy section of the Mississippi. As soon as we started getting close to the nesting area we could hear what sounded like cackling (the sound the baby heron's make when they're hungry) coming from within the forest. I'd never heard anything like it. Not only did we get to see the nesting herons, but we also saw a beaver, 2 muskrats, an osprey, and a family of grebes.
